At Tehran's nuclear conference—put on at the same time to rival Obama's—Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blasted the U.S. for having hypocritical and dangerous policies that could spur nuclear proliferation. In comments that were broadcast over Iran's state-owned Press TV Saturday, Ahmadinejad criticized the U.N. Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (which is responsible for conducting the inspections that have caused problems for Iran) for being controlled by a small number of "bullying" countries. He also called for the destruction of all nuclear weapons, beginning with those in the U.S. President Obama has been urging the Security Council, and China in particular, to hit Iran with more sanctions in response to its continuing nuclear program. Iran says its program is intended for only peaceful purposes, a point Ahmadinejad reiterated. Ahmadinejad also said that he sent a letter to Obama this week, saying that “Iran was his only chance at success.”
