Does President Obama face the prospect of dealing with a kinder, more moderate Iran? Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami is expected to challenge current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the country’s upcoming elections on June 12, according to The Washington Post. Khatami is a moderate who, as president from 1997 to 2005, tried to broaden Iran’s legal freedoms and return the isolated country to the international fold. Ahmadinejad and his supporters, meanwhile, have stepped up their attacks on Khatami. "They are very, very worried, because now that Khatami is running, their chances of winning the election have diminished," said one supporter of Khatami.
