China allowed the wife of the artist Ai Weiwei to visit him 43 days after he was arrested for “economic crimes.” According to people to have spoken to her, Ai’s wife Lu Quing says he appears to be in good condition and is receiving the medical care he needs for high blood pressure and diabetes. His wife did not describe his living conditions except to say that he is in neither a hospital nor a jail and that he is able to move freely within where he is being held. He asked Lu about his mother and family, but the two were unable to discuss his treatment by the Chinese authorities.
