Akhtar Mansour Named New Taliban Leader

The Taliban announced Mullah Akhtar Mansour as their new leader Thursday, a day after Afghan and U.S. officials said the group’s previous chief, Mullah Omar, likely died in a Karachi hospital in 2013. Mansour was Omar’s deputy, but the BBC reports that his appointment was far from unanimous. The Taliban also postponed peace talks with the Afghan government amid the changes.
