A Birmingham police sergeant was fatally shot outside a nightclub early Sunday, and an officer was critically injured, during an investigation of area car burglaries, according to reports. Officials identified the victim as Sgt. Wytasha Carter, 44, saying he had been with the Birmingham Police Department since 2011, according to AL.com.The incident unfolded about 2 a.m. An undercover officer working a “special detail” on car break-ins saw two suspects and then called for backup. Carter responded, per AL.com. The undercover and sergeant went up to the two suspects. “The officers approached one suspect and patted him down where they found what they believed to be a weapon,” Police Chief Patrick Smith reportedly said. “They asked him about it, he armed himself and fired upon our officers.” “What I can tell you is it appears our officers were unable to respond,” Smith said. “They were taken completely by surprise. We can’t go into great detail because we are still in the infancy stage of the investigation.” “Both of them were shot in very critical areas,'' Smith added. One of the suspects was wounded, and another was placed under arrest, AL.com noted.
