Alex van der Zwaan, a London attorney and son-in-law of a Russian oligarch, pleaded guilty to special counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment charging him with lying to federal investigators about his interactions with Rick Gates, a former Trump campaign aide. Additionally, he is accused of lying “about his role in the production of a report on the trial of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko”--who was a political foe of a Gates and Paul Manafort client--and lying about the timing of his last communications with “Person A.” Van der Zwaan served as a “rule-of-law consultant” to the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice and represented firms regarding mining assets in Ukraine at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom until he was reportedly fired last year. He also married the daughter of Russian-Ukrainian billionaire German Khan last year.
