Luca Guadagnino’s planned American Psycho remake has found its new Patrick Bateman in Austin Butler. Actor Christian Bale’s pitch-perfect portrayal of the character made the 2000 film, based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name, a critical and cultural hit. And when news broke in October that Guadagnino was remaking the film, a flurry of young Hollywood names were thrown around as potentials of the lead role, including Jacob Elordi. However, Variety reported that Butler, fresh off of his acclaimed portrayal of The King in Elvis, clinched the role and will now enter Guadagnino’s often sexually charged film world. Guadagnino is known for directing Call Me by Your Name, Challengers, and most recently Queer, with actor Daniel Craig receiving Oscar buzz for his portrayal of a defeated American expat living in 1950s Mexico City. “Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, the film’s distributor.
