Meb Keflezighi became the first American to win the Boston Marathon since 1983, with a time of 2:08:37 on Monday. Keflezighi, 38, is an immigrant from Eritrea—his family settled in San Diego after fleeing the war-torn country in the 1980s. In 2009, Keflezighi also became the first American to win the New York City Marathon since 1982. Rita Jeptoo of Kenya won the women’s race in 2:18:57, which marked a course record. Last year's Boston Marathon was marred by twin bomb explosions, which killed three and injured hundreds.
