A disturbing U.S. epidemic

The Guardian’s Seema Jilani writes about providing medical care for a four-year-old abuse victim suffering from skull fractions and venereal disease. The abuser? Her stepfather. “I actually sighed with relief when I learned she later died of her abusive injuries,” Jilani writes. No one likes to talk about it, but the U.S. actually has the worst child abuse record in the developed world, with 20,000 children killed every year by their own family members. Why is it so bad in the U.S.? Jilani argues that income disparity and ever-shrinking social services lead to abuse. Plus, anti-abortion sentiments exacerbate the problem.
