LGBT advocates are cheering the United States’ decision to tie foreign aid to countries’ protection of sexual minorities. But GlobalPost’s Kevin Douglas Grant is taking a more somber tack. The development is certainly a welcome step, but America would do well to look in the mirror as it sermonizes on the importance of legal protections for gays. The U.S., after all, is not the most progressive country in the world when it comes to this issue. “As in the U.S., where LGBT policy is often contradictory and social attitudes vary widely—or in Spain, where gay marriage is legal but discrimination persists—official acts are only part of the story.”
