Apparently, people still take trains. Amtrak just completed another record year—31.2 million passengers in fiscal 2012, which ended in September. That’s up 3.5 percent from the previous year. Virtually every sector saw growth, but the numbers were driven higher largely by the fact that on the East coast, trains are taking market share from planes. Traffic on the Boston-Washington corridor, favored by elites and college students, rose 4.8 percent to 11.4 million.
