An anonymous South Carolina resident has claimed their winnings from the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot from late last year, the Associated Press reports. In a statement, the lottery commission said the individual elected to remain anonymous and chose to get their earnings in one lump sum. He or she reportedly received close to $878 million the largest jackpot payout to a single winner in American history. “We are delighted that the winner is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize,” Hogan Brown, the commission’s executive director, said. The individual reportedly bought the ticket between Oct. 20 and Oct. 23 at a Simpsonville convenience store, which will receive $50,000 for selling the winning ticket. According to the commission, the state will also get $61 million in income taxes from the winnings.
