Another Reason Sandoval Can't Be VP: He Won't Bow to Norquist--David Frum
Late in February, John Avlon interviewed Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval. Sandoval is a Hispanic Republican Governor who has taken a lot of strong positions on education reform. His big heresy used to be that he was pro-choice. His latest political move might be even more controversial to Republicans. Sandoval has announced his commitment to extending a set of tax increase to fund the education budget:
Gov. Brian Sandoval’s announcement Tuesday that he would propose another extension of temporary tax increases to fund education put him on a trajectory toward the political center.
The move, Sandoval reasoned, will prevent deeper cuts to education and, he hopes, fend off calls for a tax increase when lawmakers meet again next year.
His decision is a reversal from the position on which he campaigned two years ago but is less surprising given his reputation as a moderate Republican open to compromise.
Why can Sandoval do this? He has not signed Grover Norquist's tax pledge.
