Thousands of protesters descended on several German cities Monday night to rally against what they refer to as the Islamization of Europe. The Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West (Pegida) organized a demonstration of some 18,000 people in Dresden, with other marches in Berlin, Cologne, and Stuttgart. German Chancellor Angela Merkel along with other senior politicians and business leaders spoke out against the group and have urged Germans to reject anti-immigration rallies. Thousands of people organized counterprotests in Berlin, Cologne, and Dresden while lights were shut off at Cologne Cathedral, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, and TV Tower to show solidarity with German Muslims.
