The Associated Press has demanded credit and compensation from artist Shepard Fairey for his iconic Obama HOPE image, which has been used widely on campaign paraphernalia. It turns out Fairey's red-white-and-blue design is based on a 2006 photo by Manny Garcia, who was on assignment for the AP. After catching wind of this, the wire service determined that Fairey's poster violated copyright rules. Fairey, meanwhile, contends that he is protected by fair use. Both sides are in discussions to reach an agreement.
