Apple Maps renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, in accordance with President Donald Trump’s day one executive order. This comes after the Trump administration updated the U.S. database for geographic names, called the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, late Sunday. Google Maps and Bing Maps have both also renamed the gulf, with Google stating on Monday that it began rolling out changes to reflect the update “consistent with our longstanding practices,” The Hill reported. According to Google Maps, the name of the body of water will depend on where the user is located. U.S. users will see “Gulf of America,” Mexico users will see “Gulf of Mexico,” and the rest of the world will see both names “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).” Trump’s executive order was met with resistance from Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said, “To change the name of an international sea, it is not a country that changes it. It is an international organization that does this,” according to an Al Jazeera translation of a press conference.
