Ariel Castro actively left doors unlocked and wanted the three women he held captive to flee during their last six months in his Cleveland house of horrors, according to his lawyer. Craig Weintraub told WKYC his former client was increasingly concerned about the daughter he had with captive Amanda Berry, and Castro wanted them all to escape. “He didn’t have the courage to go to the police department and surrender, and the only way this was going to happen is if he was negligent and allowed them to leave the house and be able to find a way out while he was gone a few hours,” said Weintraub, adding that Castro toyed with him by preferring to speak naked and ordering Weintraub to turn off air conditioning to avoid tough questioning.
