Outside Magazine published Lance Armstrong’s first interview in more than a year on Wednesday in which he discussed the doping scandal, his legacy, and who he thinks won the Tour de France races after his titles were stripped. “If I didn’t win then somebody needs to win,” he said “I think it would be a mistake and disrespectful to the sport to leave seven years empty.” Asked how he feels about his legacy, Armstrong said: “For a decade and a half, I was able to control the message, to control the narrative, to control the direction of the story. I’ve lost all that. It’s a waste of my time to try to continue to try to be that person.” He also said he would have been content to keep the doping scandal under wraps. “I would’ve been fine to never say anything,” he said. “That’s probably not a popular response either.”
