U.S. Army prosecutors alleged that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl deliberately left his post in Afghanistan in June 2009 during opening arguments in his trial Thursday. “Under the cover of darkness, he snuck off the post,” Maj. Margaret Kurz said. The 29-year-old soldier could face life in prison for charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. “The government should make Sgt. Bergdahl’s statements available to the public, not only just to you,” was Bergdahl’s attorney’s one-line opening statement to the judge, referring to the former prisoner of war’s statements made in the course of the investigation.
