Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who announced this week he is running for U.S. Senate in Arizona, repeated the false claim that former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate is a “forgery document,” and said Congress should pass legislation requiring a full background check of presidential candidates’ birth certificates. Arpaio made the remarks in an interview with WABC. President Donald Trump pardoned Arpaio last year after he was convicted of criminal contempt of court.
