A priceless 17th-century painting was stolen from a church in Italy that was badly damaged in earthquakes last month. The 1631 painting, Pardon in Assisi by French artist Jean Lhomme, was positioned inside a church in Nottoria. According to the church’s pastor, the building was at risk of collapsing on anyone who was inside, but the thieves went in anyway. According to Italian news agency ANSA, officials have removed around 200 cultural items from churches that were damaged in the earthquakes. Thousands of people were displaced after the earthquakes, which have hit Italy’s central region the hardest.
