At least 15 people were injured and some 60 buildings damaged in fierce North Carolina storms that some forecasters suspected could have been a tornado. Ten people were injured in Rutherford County, police said, and another five were injured when the storm hit the Icard area of Burke County a few minutes later. A woman in Ellenboro in Rutherford County described the storm as “frightening” and “all at once, you could hear stuff breaking and tearing up” and a piece of a neighbor’s roof ended up in her front yard. The American Red Cross opened up a shelter in Icard. A weather service team planned to tour the area Thursday to determine if the storms were caused by a tornado.
