At least six people were killed and 150 injured Thursday morning when a passenger train heading to Karachi collided with a freight train in Pakistan’s Punjab region. Four carriages were overturned in the crash about 15 miles from the city of Multan, local authorities said. Rescue workers were slow to respond due to the Eid holidays, and the death toll may increase, as at least 10 of those wounded suffered serious injuries. The crash is just the latest reminder that the country’s railway network is underfunded and poorly maintained.
