Attacks by an Islamic militant group killed dozens of people in Nigeria over the weekend. The Red Cross said that more than 100 people had been killed, but the government estimated 69 deaths. Boko Haram took responsibility for the attacks, which included bombings of mosques and churches, followed by gun battles with police. President Goodluck Jonathan said, “They seem to be one step ahead of us. Security agencies are gathering information that will enable them to catch up.” Boko Haram claims that the government has tortured its members and carried out extrajudicial killings. A spokesman said, “More attacks are on the way. We will continue attacking federal government formations until security forces stop their excesses on our members and vulnerable civilians.”
