Sitting through a movie in the same theater where their loved ones were murdered is probably not what the families of the Aurora massacre had in mind for the new year. Cinemark, which owns the theater where 12 died when a gunman opened fire, invited the families of victims to an “evening of remembrance”—complete with free movie tickets—for the cineplex’s re-opening on Jan. 17. The families responded in a letter calling the event a “thinly veiled publicity ploy” and pointing out that the theater had refused invitations to speak to them after the tragedy. The theater is currently facing a lawsuit from the victims’ families.
