The Australian government is joining recovery efforts for three missing U.S. Marines whose helicopter crashed off the country’s northeast coast in what was described as a “mishap.” The U.S. military notified the next-of-kin on Sunday after deciding to end the search-and-rescue operation. The incident, which involved a MV-22 Osprey aircraft, is under investigation. The other 23 individuals inside the aircraft were successfully rescued, officials said. White House Chief of Staff John Kelly briefed President Trump on the incident, an official said.
