For the first in nearly three decades, Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest — and it was all thanks to a bearded drag queen. On Saturday night, Conchita Wurst rocked the Copenhagen audience of Eurovision, the international music competition, with the power ballad “Rise Like a Phoenix.” Wurst (real Tom Neuwirth) is not the first Eurovision winner to challenge gender norms. In 1998, Israel's Dana International, who had male-to-female gender reassignment surgery, won. Still, Wurst used the win to speak out against Russian premiere Vladimir Putin's anti-LGBT measures."I don't know if he is watching this now, but if so, I'll say it: 'We're unstoppable.'"
