Always feeling anxious? There’s a cure, and it doesn’t involve drugs, medicinal herbs, or shock therapy. Ella Berthoud and Susan Elderkin, the authors of the new book The Novel Cure, recommend simply reading Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady.
Susan Elderkind is an English author and bibliotherapist. Her novel Sunset Over Chocolate Mountains won a Betty Trask Prize and was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. The Voice was shortlisted for both the Ondaatje Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. She was one of Granta's 20 Best Young British Novelists in 2003 and won the 2007 Society of Authors Travel Award. Her newest book, with Ella Berthoud, is The Novel Cure: From Abandonment to Zestlessness: 751 Books to Cure What Ails You.
