Moreau, whose lovers included Miles Davis, starred in more than 100 films during her career, including Francois Truffaut’s art-house landmark Jules et Jim, and was awarded an honorary Oscar in 1998 for lifetime achievement. In a statement Monday, President Emmanuel Macron said Moreau, whom Orson Welles called “the greatest actress in the world,” had a “spark in her eye that defied reverence and was an invitation to insolence, to liberty, to this whirlpool of life that she loved so much, and that she made us love.”
