President Obama won't get his vote on gun control, after all. The bipartisan amendment to expand background checks failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster, meaning that the larger gun-control bill will likely be pulled from the Senate. The final vote was 54 in favor, 46 against. An unknown person shouted, "Shame on you!" from the galleries where families of those killed in Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech were watching. The background-check amendment was seen as an essential addition to the larger gun-control bill if it were to stand a chance of passing the Senate.
