At least four people are dead after government forces charged into Manama’s central square and cleared it of protesters. The demonstrators, mainly Shiites who oppose Bahrain’s Sunni rulers, had occupied Pearl Square for a month; the government, it seems, was no longer willing to tolerate them after it declared a state of emergency Tuesday. The dead are two protesters and two police officers. It is unclear if Saudi soldiers, who entered Bahrain earlier this week, took part in the attack.
