Bahrain has sentenced 20 medics to up to 15 years in prison for treating protesters injured after a government crackdown. They were charged with plotting to overthrow the government and provoking sectarian hatred, but human-rights activists were encouraged that they would get off after the government released them on bail after several doctors and nurses began hunger strikes. Their families claim they were tortured into making false confessions. Bahrain’s protest movement largely fell silent after Saudi troops intervened, but the BBC says skirmishes with the government are still a regular occurrence.
