Bay Area commuters are going to have a hard Monday. Unless union leaders and Bay Area Rapid Transit officials reach an agreement, workers will begin striking at midnight Sunday. Union leaders are demanding a pay raise and medical and pension benefits. BART director James Fang told local news that the talks between the contending powers that ran for two hours on Thursday were more contentious than similar discussions that led to a six-day strike in 1997.
