Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics, making it the first city to host both the Winter and Summer Games. Members of the International Olympic Committee voted for the Chinese capital over Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Friday, after Chinese President Xi Jinping made a vow to put on a “fantastic, extraordinary and excellent” event. The voting numbers were not immediately available. Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and was considered the favorite for 2022, despite a lack of snow and wintery conditions. A key factor in the award was said to be a promise by Beijing to tackle the air pollution that blights the city.
