After a terrifying ordeal Monday night when NYU’s Langdon Medical Center had to evacuate 300 patients in the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, another city hospital has gone dark. Bellevue Hospital Center, New York City’s flagship public hospital and one of the city’s major trauma centers, is evacuating 500 patients after its backup generators failed on Wednesday. Administrators have been appealing to other hospitals to take patients, marking requests “URGENT” and “ASAP.” The medical center is near the East River and wasn’t in the worst of the flood zone, but it lost power and had been operating on backup generators.
