Bernie Madoff’s Last Surviving Son Dies

FALL FROM GRACE

At age 48 of blood cancer.

Bernie Madoff’s son, Andrew Madoff, has died of a blood cancer. Madoff was plagued by mantle-cell lymphoma and “died peacefully” at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he was surrounded by family, according to his lawyer. Madoff, 48, was a lymphoma survivor but was beset by the shame he felt after his father was arrested for running a multibilion-dollar Ponzi scheme. Andrew had previously expressed that “even on my deathbed I will never forgive him for what he did.” Despite that, Madoff said he wouldn’t get rid of his surname. “Changing my name doesn’t change who I am,” he told New York magazine in 2011. Andrew’s brother Mark committed suicide in 2010, after a $66.9 million lawsuit was filed against him.
