There may have been a presidential swearing-in take place, but to fashion-conscious inauguration watchers this week, the real question was, who would Michelle wear? When the first lady appeared on the morning of the inauguration in a Thom Browne dress and coat (right), which were custom-made from the fabric of silk neckties, and a J.Crew belt (which quickly sold out), she was widely applauded for her selection. But the real surprise came later that night, when she appeared at the inaugural ball in a red silk draped dress designed for her by Jason Wu, who had designed her first inaugural gown. Another highlight came the next day, when she wore a cream-colored wool coat and dress by Naeem Khan—which had reportedly been in the running for her Inauguration Day look—for the National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral.
