This year’s Emmys red carpet was not a risk-taking—or even very fashionable—one, though few of the stars walking it looked very comfortable, says Cathy Horyn of The New York Times. Many actresses stuck to safe column dresses with a sprinkling of ruffles, and navy was a big color of the night. The handful of daring dress-wearers included Mad Men’s January Jones, who wore a somewhat odd blue Versace Atelier dress with a “strange conical bodice.” She told red-carpet reporters, “I feel like a peacock.” Anna Paquin, of True Blood looked bold in a gold-embroidered Alexander McQueen. Glee’s Lea Michele looked great in your typical strapless dress, hers by Oscar de la Renta. Claire Danes wore a beautiful beaded number by Armani Prive. Juliana Margulies looked comfortable—she was wearing her own shoes. And one big surprise was Kate Gosselin, who looked somewhat out of place, but nevertheless great in an updo and a black cowl-neck dress.
