U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos distanced herself on Wednesday from comments she made earlier this year about historically black colleges being “real pioneers when it comes to school choice,” the AP reported. “My intention was to say they were pioneering on behalf of students that didn’t have another choice. This was their only choice,” DeVos told the AP. “At the same time I should have decried much more forcefully the ravages of racism in this country.” Her earlier February comments had drawn backlash for failing to recognize the segregation that forcefully banned black students from attending other universities.
