Senator-elect Doug Jones chose family friend and former Vice President Joe Biden as his escort for Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony on the Senate floor, bucking the long-held tradition of choosing home-state colleagues for the honor. Jones opted to ask the former VP over current Republican Sen. Richard Shelby to accompany him. Jones, the first Democrat in Alabama in 25 years to win a U.S. Senate seat, took the oath of office on a family Bible. The Republican candidate he defeated in last month’s special election, accused pedophile Roy Moore, has yet to officially concede.
