American consumers weren’t willing to let a weak economy get in the way of a good sale. They spent a record $11.4 billion on Black Friday, up 6.6 percent from last year. Sales continued strongly over the weekend, with retailers raking in a record total of $52.4 billion over the Thanksgiving holiday. Over the three days, the average person spent $398—up from $365 last year.
