Chicago police announced a “very comprehensive review” of where their tactics went wrong after more than 100 people were shot over the Fourth of July holiday. A total of 101 people were shot from late Friday to early Wednesday, 15 of them fatally. Almost half of the incidents came in the final 12 hours of the four-day weekend. Anthony Guglielmi, a police spokesman, said many of the incidents were “petty disputes that escalated into somebody pulling out a gun,” the Chicago Tribune reported. The violence is “perplexing” for police, Guglielmi said, as “some very successful tactics” were used and 1,300 extra officers deployed. The bloody weekend came after President Trump took to Twitter early Friday to warn that crime in the city had reached “epidemic proportions” requiring federal help.
