John Boehner is determined to do everything he can to help Mitt Romney win the presidency—everything short of making voters love him, that is. “Listen, we’re just politicians,” the House speaker said when he was asked at a West Virginia fundraiser last week whether he could make a voter love Mitt. The answer was no. “I wasn’t elected to play God,” he said. “The American people probably aren’t going to fall in love with Mitt Romney.” Boehner suggested that outside of his friends, family, and fellow Mormons, most of the Republican presidential candidate’s votes would come from Obama haters rather than Romney lovers. He insisted that the “election is going to be a referendum on the president’s failed economic policies,” and that Romney “is going to do a great job, even if you don’t fall in love with him.”
