Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween easily won the box office for the weekend of October 21-23, racking up $27.6 million from more than 2,000 North American theaters, and defeating Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The much-hyped action sequel came in second with $23 million across 3,780 theaters. Madea’s substantial opening weekend gave Perry his best showing in six years as a director, and his most diverse audience yet: Previous installments in his Madea series brought out 80-90 percent black audiences, while for Boo! that percentage dropped to 60.
