It comes as no surprise that Book of Mormon, Broadway's biggest success story this year, won five major Tony awards early in the ceremony. The comedy about missionaries spreading Mormanism in Uganda was nominated for 14 awards including best musical. Directors Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker won early in the night for Best Direction in a Musical, while Matt Stone and Trey Parker from Comedy Central's South Park won the award for best score with Avenue Q's Robert Lopez. Nikki James won for best actress in a musical, beating big names like Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti, and Victoria Clark. The musical also earned awards for best orchestrations and sound design.
