Police in Boston say a suspect with an assault rifle and clad in body armor was shot and killed after two officers were gunned down late Wednesday night as they responded to what was reported to be a domestic dispute involving two male roommates. Police Commissioner William Evans said one officer is in “extremely critical” condition after being struck by multiple bullets; a second is in stable condition with two gunshot wounds. The cops had been responding to a call in the city’s Orient Heights neighborhood in East Boston when violence erupted. Evans told reporters the suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest, and police rushed the scene after urgent calls of “Officer down!” came from inside the apartment. Police returned fire, killing the suspect. The names of the injured officers and the suspect have not been released. Evans said nine other police were being treated for injuries from the gun battle and for stress.
