A judge ruled Friday that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will not serve jail time for abandoning his post in Afghanistan in 2009. Instead Bergdahl, who was captured and held hostage by the Taliban for five years, will be dishonorably discharged, reduced to the rank of private, and fined $1,000 a month for 10 months. Bergdahl had faced a maximum life sentence in prison after pleading guilty in October to charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
