Boy Hero Dies in Australian Floods

Disasters

After telling rescuer to save his brother.

Jordan Rice, a 13-year-old boy from Australia, died in the Toowoomba flood on Wednesday after instructing rescuers to save his younger brother first. Rice, his mother, and 10-year-old brother Blake climbed onto the roof of their car after being caught in the flood. A truck driver pulled up, tied himself to his truck, and went to rescue them. He reached for Jordan first, but Jordan told him to take his brother. Jordan, who could not swim, and his mother were then swept away, and both drowned. Up to 20,000 homes are at risk in Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city, because of the floods.
