BP May Give Up on Relief Well

“Static kill” sealing could be permanent.

BP’s relief well is only 30 feet from the Deepwater Horizon oil well, but the company may give up on it anyway. That’s because the “top kill” procedure, which sealed the well from the top with cement and was originally intended as a temporary fix, may in fact have permanently sealed the well. Drilling of the relief well has been delayed due to poor weather. Retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said, however, that there’s a “low probability” that he’ll allow BP to give up on the relief well now.
