Oil Spill

BP Money Is Changing Gulf

The oil may have stopped spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, but energy giant BP is still having a huge effect on the region. Not with oil now, but with money. The oil company has already paid $965 million to people living in the area affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and subsequent spill. A $20 billion fund has already been set aside for more compensation. All that money has made many fishermen decide it's better to stay off the water. Others are looking for ways to get the system—both legal and illegal—to benefit them. Bar-room fights have broken out over who is collecting money and who is not.
